Neste Jacobs to perform a comprehensive energy study for Unipetrol’s refinery site in Czech Republic

Technology, engineering and project management company Neste Jacobs and the leading refinery and petrochemical group Unipetrol, which constitutes an important part of the Czech industry, have signed an agreement for Neste Jacobs to perform a comprehensive energy efficiency study of Unipetrol’s Litvinov oil refinery in Czech Republic.

Neste Jacobs has a longstanding experience in improving energy efficiency for oil refineries and petrochemical plants. The energy efficiency study will be performed by utilizing Neste Jacobs’ proprietary NAPCON energy performance analysis, that is a unique combination of high level process know-how and modelling skills, pinch-technology, equipment expertise and automation solutions. Neste Jacobs’ energy analysis with a modular approach is a globally proven solution to identify the feasible improvement potential and create a practical action plan to implement the improvements. NAPCON energy performance analysis is fully customizable according to customer needs.

The study will review existing energy consumption and production within the refinery process units. This includes pinch-analysis to identify opportunities to improve heat integration of the process. This is combined with fired heater optimization to maximize the benefits. On top of energy efficiency, the study includes waste water optimization assessment to minimize the water usage and recycling of waste water.

“We are happy to provide our extensive energy efficiency and water management knowledge in the form of an energy study for Unipetrol’s refinery in Litvinov”, says Jarmo Suominen, CEO of Neste Jacobs. “Our excellent project team will provide systematic study to Unipetrol to discover solutions, which are both practical and lucrative.”

“Unipetrol has set an Energy Management System certified according to the ISO 50001:2011. The study is another very important step for a sustainable program in energy efficiency improvement in our company. Neste Jacobs’ high technical knowledge of refinery projects and detailed process understanding convinced us to select them as our preferred partner in this project. They have good references on energy efficiency studies especially in oil refineries,” says Tomáš Herink, Member of the Unipetrol Group’s Board of Directors responsible for research and development.

Neste Jacobs and Coolbrook to develop new olefin cracking technology

Neste Jacobs, a technology, engineering and project management company and Coolbrook, a technology development company are developing a new technology innovation in collaboration with University of Oxford’s Osney Thermo Fluids laboratory, University of Cambridge’s Whittle laboratory, and major chemical producers such as Dow Chemical as well as equipment manufacturers including MANTurbo. This innovation is based on hydrocarbon (e.g. Naphtha) cracking method, where ethylene, the core raw material for polyethylene is produced.

“Coolbrook patented RDR (RotoDynamicReactor) technology improves cracking yields of olefins with about a third compared to the best technology available today. Significant financial benefits can be gained with RDR technology. It saves non-renewable resources, decreases radically side-products from ethylene cracking, and simplifies operations of ethylene production,” states Harri Johannesdahl, CEO, Coolbrook Ltd.

Neste Jacobs is involved in the collaboration and development of this new technology with a team specializing in cracker technology, reaction kinetics, and modelling.

“Our team has been co-operating in this project with Coolbrook for several years now and we are happy that this fruitful cooperation is continuing. We are expecting great results from this collaboration in ethylene production and we believe that this innovation has great export potential,” says Jarmo Suominen, CEO, Neste Jacobs.

”Coolbrook is a product development company that co-operates with the best partners globally. Neste Jacobs represents top knowledge and competence within the field of chemical process industry and is hence a logical choice as partner for Coolbrook. During the development of the RDR technology, completely new technical solutions will be developed and patented. The skillful team from Neste Jacobs is playing a central role in this, both in terms of traditional engineering competence as of developing new innovations,” Johannesdahl continues.

During the two-year project, a pilot reactor based on RDR technology will be built and tested. The pilot reactor will verify olefin yields and confirm reactor model combining kinetics and aerodynamics and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) results. The commercial launch of this new technology is expected during 2019.

Neste Jacobs has optimized Borealis PE2 plant’s distillation section with NAPCON Controller

Technology, engineering and project management company Neste Jacobs was selected to optimize the recovery area of Borealis Borstar PE2 plant in Porvoo, Finland. The PE2 plant’s distillation section was optimized with Neste Jacobs’ NAPCON Controller solution. The aim of optimization is to reduce energy consumption and production loss and enhance the plant operability.

“We are very proud to have this opportunity to deepen and develop our relationship with Borealis further. Neste Jacobs as an optimization partner is able to provide know-how of process technologies and has optimized  performance of the PE2 plant’s distillation section with minimum risks”, says Jarmo Suominen, CEO of Neste Jacobs.

In this project the NAPCON Controller (real-time process control software) was first built on top of customer’s process simulator while the actual plant changes were undergoing. Once the process changes were ready NAPCON Controller was commissioned to the real process. This way the full financial benefits from the process control solution were achieved right after the plant start up.

Neste Jacobs has provided real-time optimization solutions already to multiple plants at Borealis. Read more about Neste Jacobs’ NAPCON Controller solutions at www.napconsuite.com

Neste Jacobs maximizes production of Forchem Oy Tall Oil Distillation Plant with NAPCON Controller

Technology, engineering and project management company Neste Jacobs has implemented NAPCON Controller to Forchem Oy’s tall oil distillation plant. Forchem Oy owns and operates a world scale tall oil distillation plant in the city of Rauma on the West Coast of Finland. The main products are Tall Oil Rosin (TOR) and Tall Oil Fatty Acid (TOFA) and the plant is flexible in the sense that different types of Crude Tall Oil can be used as feedstock. The process is mainly based on a vacuum distillation technology originally developed and designed by Neste Jacobs, presently known under the trademark ArxPinus.

Many biochemical processes offer opportunities for substantial improvement in terms of increased production. In spring 2015 Forchem Oy already awarded Neste Jacobs a NAPCON Performance Analysis project for quantifying the benefits of Advanced Process Control (APC). The NAPCON Performance Analysis lasted for two months and Neste Jacobs was able to demonstrate already then a production increase of 9%. After implementation of NAPCON Controller, a multivariable, model-predictive APC, Neste Jacobs could increase production with further 8%.

“During NAPCON Performance Analysis and the subsequent NAPCON implementation we became convinced of Neste Jacobs’ expertise to carry out the production optimization with NAPCON Controller”, says Risto Näsi, CEO of Forchem Oy. “Neste Jacobs has proven their expertise to us in Tall Oil processing technology and engineering and are now combining that expertise with high-level automation technology. We are very excited about these great results, and the attractive payback of the investment in NAPCON. NAPCON has significantly contributed to the 200 000 tons per year capacity that our plant has today”.

“Neste Jacobs is happy to be the preferred partner for bio-industry and Forchem Oy tall-oil production process is yet another great example of the innovative technology co-development partnerships we have. NAPCON Controller is very suitable solution in order to increase production for different industries such as refining, biorefining as well as dairy sector”, says Jarmo Suominen, Managing Director of Neste Jacobs.
