Neste Jacobs increases Valio Lapinlahti factory’s milk powder production by 8% with NAPCON Controller

Technology, engineering and project management company Neste Jacobs has finished an optimization project of Valio Lapinlahti factory’s milk powder production in Finland. The project’s purpose was to increase product selection and extend optimization for milk powder. The estimated 8% increase for milk powder production was reached as planned.

The optimization was done with Neste Jacobs’ NAPCON Controller solution and the project was implemented as scheduled. The increase in production was achieved without large investments or any interruptions in production. In addition, production energy efficiency improved, making the investment into NAPCON Controller very profitable.

“This was already our third completed NAPCON implementation for Valio and we were happy to continue our fruitful cooperation with them”, says Jarmo Suominen, CEO of Neste Jacobs. “Our NAPCON software can be tailored to optimize any process industry production and it has been proven to work in highly regulated oil and petrochemical industries. Therefore it is well suited for food industry as well as other industries.”

“We are very satisfied with the production increase enabled by Neste Jacobs’ NAPCON Controller solution for our Lapinlahti factory. Cooperation has worked smoothly with Neste Jacobs and they have been very helpful throughout the project. Therefore we have now looked into expanding this project as well”, tells Aleksi Ylitalo, Process Expert, Valio Ltd Lapinlahti.

In the past, Neste Jacobs has also increased the whey powder production of Valio Lapinlahti factory by 10% with NAPCON Controller.

Encouraging results from Joutseno methanation plant feasibility study by Gasum, Kemira and the City of Lappeenranta

Gasum, Kemira and the City of Lappeenranta assessed the techno-economic feasibility of a renewable gas production plant, or methanation plant, in Joutseno. If implemented on the scale now examined with an annual production of 18–28 MW, the methanation plant could be by far the largest plant in the world producing renewable methane from hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The plant concept would be based on utilizing the flows of byproducts from local industry.

The techno-economic feasibility study was conducted by Neste Jacobs and led in cooperation by the energy company Gasum Ltd, the chemicals company Kemira Oyj and the City of Lappeenranta. The results of the feasibility study show the Joutseno methanation plant to be technically feasible and the investment outlay to be around €45–62 million depending on the concept chosen to implement it.

”We intend to continue studies relating to the methanation plant including assessment of gas production costs, implementation and profitability. In the concept, the hydrogen created as a by-product in Kemira’s Joutseno plant and recyclable carbon dioxide from the local forest industry would be processed into renewable methane. We estimate that the plant could come on stream at the earliest in 2019,” says Jouni Haikarainen, Senior Vice President, Natural Gas, Gasum.

“We want to use the methanation plant feasibility study to accelerate the transformation of research carried out at Lappeenranta University of Technology into a genuine business. By producing synthetic natural gas, we are seeking an answer to a global problem: how to store renewable energy for use during certain times of the day when solar or wind power is unavailable. A plant investment like this would be a textbook example of the circular economy and of the fact that all industrial material flows could be re-used 100 percent,” says Markku Heinonen, Development Manager, City of Lappeenranta.

The feasibility study has been done as a national key project as part of the Lappeenranta-Imatra region growth agreement with the State. Looking ahead, the City of Lappeenranta considers it important for the State to recognize new forms of synthetic fuel that recycle carbon dioxide and treat them taxwise as renewable energy.

”It was interesting to be involved in the techno-economic feasibility study of the gas production plant based on new technology and industrial integration. The results of the techno-economic study show the Joutseno methanation plant to be technically feasible in the future and its concept seems promising,” says Jarmo Suominen, Managing Director and CEO of Neste Jacobs.

Neste Jacobs and Coolbrook to develop new olefin cracking technology

Neste Jacobs, a technology, engineering and project management company and Coolbrook, a technology development company are developing a new technology innovation in collaboration with University of Oxford’s Osney Thermo Fluids laboratory, University of Cambridge’s Whittle laboratory, and major chemical producers such as Dow Chemical as well as equipment manufacturers including MANTurbo. This innovation is based on hydrocarbon (e.g. Naphtha) cracking method, where ethylene, the core raw material for polyethylene is produced.

“Coolbrook patented RDR (RotoDynamicReactor) technology improves cracking yields of olefins with about a third compared to the best technology available today. Significant financial benefits can be gained with RDR technology. It saves non-renewable resources, decreases radically side-products from ethylene cracking, and simplifies operations of ethylene production,” states Harri Johannesdahl, CEO, Coolbrook Ltd.

Neste Jacobs is involved in the collaboration and development of this new technology with a team specializing in cracker technology, reaction kinetics, and modelling.

“Our team has been co-operating in this project with Coolbrook for several years now and we are happy that this fruitful cooperation is continuing. We are expecting great results from this collaboration in ethylene production and we believe that this innovation has great export potential,” says Jarmo Suominen, CEO, Neste Jacobs.

”Coolbrook is a product development company that co-operates with the best partners globally. Neste Jacobs represents top knowledge and competence within the field of chemical process industry and is hence a logical choice as partner for Coolbrook. During the development of the RDR technology, completely new technical solutions will be developed and patented. The skillful team from Neste Jacobs is playing a central role in this, both in terms of traditional engineering competence as of developing new innovations,” Johannesdahl continues.

During the two-year project, a pilot reactor based on RDR technology will be built and tested. The pilot reactor will verify olefin yields and confirm reactor model combining kinetics and aerodynamics and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) results. The commercial launch of this new technology is expected during 2019.
