A massive harbour upgrade

Located about 160 km southwest of Stockholm, the Port of Norrköping (Norrköping Hamn) has been used for shipping and trade since the sixteenth century. Today, it is still one of Sweden’s most important gateways for maritime traffic. A modern, well-equipped, full-service port, it provides a centre for logistics and intermodal cargo handling for Swedish businesses, and has recently become a distribution hub for the whole Nordic region.

As part of their ongoing effort to improve port facilities and enhance the site infrastructure, the Port of Norrköping wanted their oil depot renovated. Originally built in the 1950s, and completely embedded in solid eastern Swedish granite, an upgrade would improve the performance of the existing equipment and extend the active lifetime of the depot so it could serve the port and its customers for many decades to come.

Neste Jacobs planned a thorough overhaul of the entire depot. There was to be a completely new set of instruments, pumps and valves for the storage processes, new transformers and switchgears for the power supply, and a new, up-to-date and user-friendly control system to run the plant safely and securely. In addition, they provided a project execution strategy that saw the work through from planning to final handover with a minimum of disruption to existing services at the port. The project took two years and was finished by 2017.

To achieve these results, Neste Jacobs delivered:

  • Feasibility study
  • Basic engineering
  • Detailed engineering and execution
Key customer benefits
  • Improved safety
  • More easy-to-use control system
  • Extended lifetime for existing equipment
  • Very little interruption of ongoing processes
